With the Fourth of July fast approaching, it’s time to start making decisions on places to go, people to see, and attractions to enjoy. This year, the holiday lands on a Monday, which means one thing… LONG WEEKEND! What better way to enjoy an extra day off than to explore some of the fun-filled events taking place around Staten Island. Below is a list of some of the notable events to check out around the area.
The Huck Finn Fishing Tournament and Costume Contest
Begin the day by taking part in the 88th annual Huck Finn Fishing Tournament and Costume Contest. The events are being held in Willowbrook Park off of Eton Place. Registration for the fishing tournament begins at 8:00am with the tournament beginning at 9. In addition to the opportunity to win trophies for placement in the tournament, each participant receives a bamboo fishing rod for entering.
Following the tournament will be the Huck Finn/Betty Thatcher Costume Contest. This contest is designed for children from 5-14 to come dressed in their favorite costume. The costume contest will begin at 11:15am so be sure to arrive in plenty of time to win!
The Travis Parade
Perhaps the most honored event taking place on the island is the Travis Parade. This year marks the 106th annual rendition of the parade. For those who wish to attend, the pre-parade ceremony begins at noon on Monday, July 4th with the Parade expected to commence at 12:30pm. The step-off location will be the Showplace Entertainment Center on 141 East Service Road. All roads into Travis will be closed while the parade travels its route, most notably the Victory Boulevard Exit off route 440. Make sure you arrive early enough if you are travelling by car to get into the area as these roads are scheduled to close by 11:30 am.
The ceremony will be recognizing several honored guests, including this year’s Grand Marshall, NYC Council Minority Leader, Steven Matteo.
Enjoy food and drink, while joining in the parade route decked out in your favorite red, white, and blue attire. This will be an amazing experience, and is something that needs to be experienced at least once in everyone’s lifetime.
Binx the Clown Show at Fantasy Shore Amusement Park
Looking for an entertaining option for your children this year? Check out Binx the Clown, performing at the Fantasy Shore Amusement Park in Midland Beach. The show itself is free, and runs at 2:00pm then again at 4:00pm. Binx will bring his brand of humor and entertainment that is certain to have the crowd roaring in laughter!
While there, be sure to take full advantage of all the amazing rides and attractions at Fantasy Shore. Whether your fancy is the tea cups, or the Verrazano Viper, it is certain that fun will be had by those of all ages. All rides range between 3-4 tickets, and you can purchase tickets in bundles, or for $1.00 each.
The Staten Island Philharmonic Concert and Fireworks
Head on over to Alice Austen Park to listen to the glorious sounds of the Staten Island Philharmonic as they thrill the crowd with a rendition of “American Salute” among others. The concert will begin at 6:00pm and is followed by a dazzling display of fireworks emanating from the nearby Waterfront. Get there early as seating is first come first serve. What better way could there be to end the Fourth of July celebrations then by having a great seat for some wonderful music followed by a fireworks display.
